In the early s, car manufacturer Roland White saw an opportunity to participate in the ever-expanding tractor market.
Those criteria were met — and then some — when he introduced the first Cleveland Tractor Company crawler in That first crawler, the Model R, was quickly succeeded by the Model W in And it was this model that established Cleveland Motors and its Cletrac tractors as a serious contender in the crawler market. So much so that crawler giant Holt was forced to react by beefing up his line of little crawlers like the Caterpillar Ten.
One of the major attractions of the Model W was certainly its price. But the Fordson was crude by the engineering standards of this time. The Model W was anything but rudimentary. Indeed, the Cletrac crawler is considered one of the most advanced tractors of its time. For starters, it employed the unique Controlled Differential Steering mechanism patented by White and a planetary gear system that delivered power to both tracks even on turns. Cleveland referred to this advance as the Tru-Traction system.
Its basic principle would be utilized by all Cletrac crawlers in the future. Cletrac crawlers also introduced many other advances unheard of in the s, such as the use of an air cleaner system and roller bearings both used to extend engine life and tracks made of manganese instead of cast iron.
The latter innovation extended the life of Cletrac tracks and reduced their weight. Weight was a heavy issue for Roland White. His intent was to fashion a tractor that was light on its feet yet still offered all the tractive advantages of a crawler. Cleveland promoted their crawlers as being able to deliver more power to the ground compared to wheeled tractors and being able to do so while producing far less soil compaction.
This claim is the first recognition of the negative impacts compaction had on crop yields by a manufacturer, a distinction that would not become commonly acknowledged for decades to come. White also was dedicated to building a crawler for ready use by Midwestern farmers. And that intent can best be seen in his Model F, the little brother to the Model W. The F was specially designed for cultivating row crops like corn.July 14,PM Welcome, Guest.
Please login or register. Did you miss your activation email? Hello I recently joined the forum. I also recently bought a cletrac. I have no idea about this machine exept it runs and I love old tractors. Any way on the tag it says model W and serial number I was woondering if any one could tell my what year it is and if it is a model W because it has no steering wheel just two levers.
And i would like two change the oil if someone could tell me how much it takes thanks:o. Model W's have steering wheels and the serial number tag is on the steering wheel base. They also started with serial number and usually with the steering wheel changed to levers the base and number tag's are gone.
They have cletrac motors 4cyl, with a forward and reverse only. No subject. The crawlers with uper track wheels were H's and are older than the W's. I have had W's with Model A ford engines and early 4cly chev engines, anything that would work. After the plant closed, he and my uncle started an excavating business, initially using Cletrac and Oliver Crawler tractors.

I have not seen any W's with upper track wheels. My oldest W is around a14, serial number, all have cast iron tanks with cletrac cast in the tank. I am just finishing two H's one serial number has a tin radiator and should of had the old style tracks.
I have one set of old style tracks with my R serial number The second H is serial number this machine has a cast Iron radiator tank with nothing cast into the front.
The serial number tag says Cleveland tractor Co. Both H's have top rollers and the later H has the cast iron airbreather. Colar is green with red undercarriages and the logos on the side say Cleveland tractor Co. Hope the info helps. Thanks Albert. I did not know that some H's had cast iron radiators. So, basically if they don't say Cletrac and they are of that vintage, they are H's? Did all H's have upper track wheels?

We had Sergio primed for this venue even before he broke his major duck at The Masters. He will be heavily backed for good reason.
This is the major that everyone expected him to win first and he has had so many near misses too. If I could pick one player only, Sergio would be the man.
